USA: in the Name of Law

1 x 52'

Synopsis

Over a century ago, the French writer Alexis de Tocqueville stated that « In the United States everything is always settled in court ». This judgement is only too true today : kids who take their parents to court, millions of smokers who have sued the tabacco companies, stand-in prostitutes who trick clients into getting arrested, sexual deviants constantly under close surveillance…
The nation has run head-on into a mad spiral of go-to-court-at-the-drop-of-a-hat and the phrase « It’s against the law » has become the most colloquial one. We spent several weeks investigating the heart of the Miami court tribunal. We also accompanied the Florida police on the beat.
To better understand the workings of the world’s most unique system where the majority religiously abides by the law, Judge Thomas P. Jackson, the man who brought down Microsoft, as well as Oliviero Toscani, the Benneton advertiser, a die-hard enemy of capital punishment in America, tell us in their own words what America means to them…
