Located on the edge of the plain of Beauce, the cathedral of Chartres, whose two towers pointed towards the sky are visible from 30 km away, is like a lighthouse that attracts visitors and pilgrims. It is a Marian shrine among the most illustrious in France, especially thanks to the presence of the relic of the veil of the Virgin. This building is a true ode to Mary, whose maternal presence floods this monument with spirituality. Above the crypt, completed in 1024 and the largest in France, stands the 12th and 13th century cathedral, one of the most emblematic monuments of Gothic art, which served as a model for many others. Its almost miraculous longevity allows us to admire it in its original state. It is flooded by the colors of a set of medieval stained glass windows unique in the world, including the famous blue of Chartres, deeper than any natural blue. Through stone and glass, canons, artists and craftsmen, mostly anonymous, have put their faith at the service of beauty to praise God’s grace and celebrate the dignity of man. A message that has crossed the centuries to the point of deeply marking many artists such as Joris Karl Huysmans, Charles Péguy or Orson Welles.
