To spank or not to spank? The Council of Europe put this at the heart of a European debate with a very clear goal: asking member countries to vote on a law against spanking. One country actually had this debate in 1979: Sweden. They voted to ban all forms of corporal punishment on children. But what is this famous “Swedish model”?
We went to examine Swedish society from a sociological perspective, as cultural anthropologists, in search of an answer to this eternal question: is it really possible to raise a child without spanking?
