Bétharram is a major pilgrimage site on the border of Béarn and Bigorre, a few kilometers from Lourdes. This film takes us inside its sanctuary, where atmosphere, light and silence have encouraged spiritual reflection since the 17th century, when more than 80 miraculous healings had already been recorded.
A sumptuous Baroque sanctuary, a jewel of Pyrenean art, it has been a place of Marian devotion since the late 15th century. According to legend, the Virgin Mary saved a drowning girl by holding out a branch to her, giving the site its name, beth arram (“beautiful branch” in Béarnais). Saint Vincent de Paul called it one of the most visited places in the kingdom.
With archive footage and fascinating testimonies, the film leads us from the grand 17th-century chapel to the monumental Way of the Cross, the old bridge of 1687 and the astonishing Bétharram caves, on a journey that leaves us in awe.
